Founded in 1872 by J. Sterling Morton in Nebraska City, Nebraska, National Arbor Day is observed annually on the last Friday in April. On the very first Arbor Day, April 10, 1872, an estimated one million trees were planted! Each year, thousands around the country celebrate together by planting trees in their communities.

Join the Borough of Waynesboro Council, Shade Tree Commission, and Renfrew Committee, Inc. at Renfrew Museum & Park on Friday, April 26, 2024 at 4:00pm as we celebrate the 152nd anniversary of Arbor Day! Gather with us for a ceremonial planting and dedication of a Pink Dogwood (Cornus florida var. rubra) in memory of Linda Martz generously donated by her family.

This year’s Arbor Day tree selection is a pink dogwood. A very popular landscape tree, millions of pink dogwood seedlings and budded trees are produced every year for commercial nurseries around the country. It is considered a good tree for planting near utility lines, next to buildings, or near patios. Pink dogwood is an excellent contrast tree for larger evergreen backgrounds, producing lovely pink flowers with white accents in the spring and reddish fall foliage. It grows to a mature height of 20′ to 25′ tall, prefers full sun or partial sun/shade, and soil that is acidic, clay, loamy, moist, rich, sandy, and well drained.

The pink dogwood is an important source of food for many small birds and mammals including robins, cardinals and waxwings. This variety of flowering dogwood was first noticed and recorded by plant hunter Marc Catesby in 1731. The tree was soon cultivated and remains highly popular today.

Keep the Arbor Day celebration going by planting a tree at home! Free Blackgum seedlings by our friends at Bartlett Tree Experts will be available to all attendees at the Visitors Center throughout the week (while supplies last).
