Spotlight on Renfrew's Rugs

Rugs have long evoked a memory of hearth and home. They provide a glimpse into a part of history sometimes overlooked.
Renfrew Museum is proud to present a hooked rug exhibit from the Emma Nicodemus Collection in the Changing Gallery. There will also be examples of these lovely floor coverings displayed in the museum rooms.
Hooked rugs were a long established part of the culture and hand made by women, who lovingly crafted them, in New England, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, the Providences, New York, Pennsylvania and some parts of the South. This tradition, thankfully, is still being practiced today by skilled, dedicated artisans.
Thanks to the foresight of Emma Nicodemus, the woman who had a vision of what Renfrew Museum and Park would become, the colorful, whimsical, and geometrical creations are here for all to enjoy today.
